HISTORY

Main Street Cafe is in the original site of William K. Spencer's stationary store and telegraph office, which was opened in the fall of 1855. During the 1920's this location was turned into the "OK Pool Hall." The Old Pool Hall operated from the 1920's into the 1970's. People still come into the restaurant remember the days when they played pool here.

During 1973, Dale Teubert opened "The Hardrock Saloon,"named for the area's known hardrock mining. In 1978 the saloon was briefly turned into a restaurant.

Main Street Cafe has occupied the building since 1978, and the current owners, Paul & Margot Currie, took over the operation of the restaurant and bar during May, 1994.

The Main Street Bar, next door to the restaurant, is located in the building that was once the original Post Office, circa 1857. Joseph and Pauline Van Hooter owned the building in early 1862. Pauline had worked for John Sutter in Sacramento as a seamstress. The Van Hooter`s were successful in mining, real estate and Pauline operated a soap factory. In 1890 Pauline built and managed Van`s Opera House, currently the site of Hedman`s Furniture on Mill Street. A candy factory occupied the building by 1879. In 1898 the building was known as the"Tamale Kitchen."The Jack O`Lantern Restaurant was then housed in the building during the 1930`s and 1940`s. The Exclusive Beauty Shop moved in next from 1948 thru 1960. Then came the "Uptown Cafe" followed by the "Happy Valley Cafe." "Natures Way Health Foods" occupied the building during the 1970`s.
